Spring into health

Spring is a time to think about getting out and about and embrace the change in seasons.  In terms of exercise make a conscious effort to walk to the shops, take the stairs or take the kids to the park. Spring clean your house... Naturally.

Natural and Chemical Free Methods

  1. Vinegar - this is a great, cheap product that will help remove stubborn stains from all kinds of surfaces. A spirit vinegar is best as it is odourless and as vinegar isn’t harmful to either you or the environment it is a far better solution than powerful de-scalers and stain removers.

  2. Eco balls - for washing machines can clean clothes quite effectively without the need for any detergents and you can even get dryer balls to replace fabric softeners.

  3. Baking Soda - sprinkled on a damp sponge or cloth, baking soda can be used as a gentle non-abrasive cleanser for kitchen counter tops, sinks, bathtubs, ovens, and fibreglass. It will eliminate perspiration odours and even neutralise the smell of many chemicals if you add up to a cup per load to laundry. It is a useful air freshener, and a fine carpet deodoriser.

  4. Washing Soda - neutralises acid-based odours in water, and adsorbs odours from the air. Sprinkled on a damp sponge or cloth it can be used in the same application as baking soda.

  5. Mould killers and Disinfectants - there are many essential oils, such as lavender, clove, and tea tree oil (an excellent natural fungicide), that are very antiseptic, as it is a grapefruit seed extract. Use one teaspoon of essential oil to 2 cups of water in a spray bottle (make sure to avoid eyes). A grapefruit seed extract spray can be made by adding 20 drops of extract to 4 cups of water.

Allergies and Sensitivities

Spring is upon us and this means pollen, dust and allergies!

  • What is an allergy?
An allergy or intolerance occurs when the immune system launches an attack against a normally harmless substance such as pollen or dust. A side effect of this defence mechanism is the production of histamine, the chemical responsible for the nasty symptoms we associate with allergies: redness and itchiness, runny eyes and nose and sore throat.

  • What does this tell us?
As 85% of our immune system is in our gut, the major factor that suppresses or makes our immune system hypersensitive is in fact our gut! Therefore is makes perfect sense to conclude that when our gut is not in prime order it is unable to maintain its constant surveillance against potential toxins. As a result of this allergies develop.

  • What can we do then?
So before grabbing antihistamines why not book into see one of our practitioners here at Care Clinic who can advise you on ways to improve your gastrointestinal function and allergies at the same time!
