Skillaroos awarded fellowship

Dear WorldSkills Supporter,

Congratulations to John Rudge, who received the Ern MacDonald Fellowship for recognition of his dedication to the construction industry.

John and two finalists, Tim Hambly and Lachlan Thomas, were presented at a luncheon on Friday 4th April at Doltone House in Sydney. The award was presented to John by Ern MacDonald’s wife, Carmel MacDonald.

The three finalists were competitors at the 2007 WorldSkills International Competition and were eligible to receive the Fellowship for their participation in the building and construction industry.

John Rudge, silver medallist in Electrical Installations at the 2007 WorldSkills International Competition, received the Fellowship. John aims to use the financial assistance to help design and construct an eco friendly alternative power supply for a school or medical centre on Kiribati, an island in the central pacific that is under threat due to global warming.

Tim Hambly, Bricklaying, and Lachlan Thomas , Refrigeration, (both recipients of Medallions of Excellence at the 2007 WorldSkills International Competition) both received runner-up awards. Tim aims to put the award towards establishing his own business in the near future, while Lachlan would like to fund future training to obtain further engineering qualifications in both refrigeration and electrical.

The Ern MacDonald Fellowship aims to support those who are dedicated to developing their career. WorldSkills Australia and Dusseldorp Skills Forum together with the MacDonald family are proud to be able to offer this award to Skillaroos competing in the building and construction categories to commemorate the life of Ern MacDonald.

Ern MacDonald, who passionately supported development in young people, was a highly valued board member of both organisations and his career in the building industry spanned four decades.

A video presentation was shown during the luncheon to celebrate the eligible Skillaroos who contributed to the building and construction industry. Click here to view
