Mark CallaghanMark Callaghan's Last Word on 2008

Dear WorldSkills Supporter,

The end of another busy year is in sight and I, like most of you are looking forward to a break and spending time with family and friends.

While 2008 has been extremely busy for everyone associated with WorldSkills Australia, it has also been a very rewarding year. Some of the highlights for me include the 2008 National Competition and the spectacular Presentation Ceremony which provided a fitting way to recognise the outstanding achievements of all WorldSkills Australia National competitors. Another highlight was the Official Launch of the 2008 Team Australia Skillaroos at Doltone House, Sydney. Set against the beautiful backdrop of Sydney Harbour we named the 29 young Australians who will be representing their country at the 40th WorldSkills Competition in Calgary, Canada in September of next year. We all look forward to watching their progress in 2009 as they prepare for their biggest challenge to date.

However, for me the biggest highlight has undoubtedly been being able to witness the continuing development of past WSA competitors. From Holly Browne, Candice Faranda and Courtney Barton, who were involved in the WorldSkills International Youth Forum in Vienna, Stuart Aisbett who was involved in the Australian Apprenticeships Roundtable to Dale McMullen and John Rudge, who despite busy schedules, still find time to share their experiences and inspire all Australians with their stories of commitment, passion and determination.

Thank you to everyone who has been involved with WorldSkills Australia throughout 2008. None of these highlights would have been possible without the efforts of many people – many of whom freely give of their time to ensure we continue to raise the profile of trades and skills in this country.

On behalf of the WorldSkills Australia National office I would like to wish you all a very Merry Christmas and I look forward to an equally rewarding 2009.
      December 2008

The WSA Head Office will be closed the night of Tuesday 22 December, opening again on the 27 December. Please note the office will be closed for New Years Day, January 1.

SkillNews will return in February 2009.

WorldSkills Australia wishes everyone a happy and safe festive season and all the best for the New Year.

International Volunteers Day 5 December 2008

It may be a few days past, but never too late to recognise and thank our wonderful volunteers for their effort and support. WorldSkills Australia would like to extend its appreciation to the thousands of dedicated volunteers who have provided indispensable contributions to WSA. Without the commitment of the volunteers, WorldSkills Australia would not be where it is today.

Thank you!
